Volunteer of the month
Ron Carr has spent 13 years using skills he has to create equipment that is not available commercially to help children and adults with disability enjoy life to the full.
The Caloundra Power Boat Club, Bunnings (Caloundra) and Radio FM104.9 recognised his commitment to, and success in, improving the lives of others in August with an award, including meal and gift vouchers.
Mr Carr, of Caloundra, started volunteering at the Currimundi Special School in 2004 to assist students in the pool.
He had helped raise money for the school’s pool by participating with a local veteran's swimming group the 'Stunned Mullets' to swim 12 kilometres from Mudjimba Beach around Old Woman Island to Mooloolaba.
‘I got ideas from working with students in the pool to make equipment, such as an aqua walker made from PVC pipe, that allowed students with disabilities to exercise safely,’ Mr Carr said.
‘Over time I have also made equipment to assist student’s learning and improve their life skills,’ he said.
‘I believe I get more reward from seeing the results of my work than the students get benefits from using the equipment I make.’
Mr Carr also volunteers with Technical Aid to the Disabled (TAD) Queensland which aims create technical solutions for individuals with a disability, of all ages to assist in maintaining independence in their community.
‘TAD Queensland has volunteers from many backgrounds, e.g. retired engineers, who come up with ideas to help people with a disability overcome barriers to them undertaking normal activities,’ Mr Carr said.‘The volunteers then create the equipment and help the disabled learn to use the equipment,’ he said.
Nominations for the monthly award can be made by emailing FM104.9 at firstname.lastname@example.org, detailing in 25 words the reason for the nomination.
